Salta city is the largest city of the north-west and a motorcycle city: the western ring road, Paraguay, Tavella and Bolivia avenues and the historic centre concentrate dense traffic of motorcycles, chauffeur cars, deliveries and pickups heading to the valleys and the Puna. Municipal fines are issued by the city; provincial and route fines coexist on the same plates.
Context and authority
The framework is the National Traffic Law 24.449, which Salta adheres to: fixed units, two-year limitation for minor offences and five for serious ones. The municipal misdemeanour court rules on fines issued within the municipality; route fines and those of the provincial authority are explained in the Salta article.
The municipal misdemeanour court rules on the city’s fines: speeding on the avenues with speed cameras, seat belts, helmets and phones at municipal traffic checks, and parking in the historic centre. A defence is filed with the court within the period set by the notice; fines on the ring road and the access routes are provincial.
What the API returns for this jurisdiction
In Salta city the API queries the Salta city municipal misdemeanour court and, in the same lookup, the other integrated sources of Salta; it returns each fine with the authority that issued it:
- Authority and fine number exactly as each court publishes them.
- Date, location when reported and description of the infraction.
- Amount, status and payment conditions published by that court.
- Downloadable payment slip when one exists.
- Coverage per source and partial-result flag.
What the data shows
- Median age of fines without a recorded resolution
- 220 days
- Median amount band
- ARS 50,000 – ARS 100,000
Mix by infraction category
Monthly distribution of fines
Neither lookups with a fine nor voluntary payment for Salta city reached the publication floor of the data methodology; the sample of fines observed is between one hundred and five hundred. The mix is the mark of a motorcycle city: almost half of the fines are for speeding and as many for seat belts, helmets and phones, a category that barely appears in the Buenos Aires suburbs.
The median amount band is ARS 50,000 – ARS 100,000, among the lowest we publish, and the median age of open fines is 220 days.
Case study: fleets that look up plates in Salta city
- Fleet accounts in the sample
- 50
- Distinct plates looked up by fleets
- 2,040
The fleet cohort, 50 accounts with twenty or more plates and 2,040 plates in total, had fewer than fifty lookups with a Salta city fine, the floor the data methodology requires to publish a share; the figure exists, but it is not published below that threshold.
For a motorcycle delivery company or a chauffeur fleet, Salta fines are cheap but frequent, and those for helmets and phones fall on the rider: looking up each plate at month end, with the result stored, lets you deduct them from the right person before they pile up on the company’s plate.
How to integrate
Each plate is sent in a POST, with the jurisdictions to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The vehicle lookup quality guide explains how to handle partial results and the API page details access.

}Read the result per source: the municipal court and the provincial source answer separately, and the partial-result flag says whether any failed to answer. The vehicle lookup quality guide explains how to handle that case.
Limits and considerations
- Fines on the ring road and the access routes are provincial, not municipal; the Salta province article describes that circuit.
- Fixed-unit amounts are converted at the value current at the source; the final amount is set by the authority at the time of payment.
- Proprietary data comes from user lookups, not from a registry: the share of fines is skewed towards suspect plates.
- A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
- The API neither pays fines nor handles defences; it delivers information to decide.
