Sergipe is Brazil’s smallest state and a corridor of passage: BR-101 crosses it between Bahia and Alagoas in a little over two hundred kilometres, Aracaju and its metropolitan region concentrate the population, the basin’s oil and gas and the sugarcane move trucks, and BR-235 climbs to the sertão. Infractions are applied by DETRAN-SE in the registry, by Aracaju’s SMTT and the municipal bodies in the cities, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on BR-101.
Context and authorities
Infractions are governed by the Brazilian Traffic Code: each has a fixed value, a seriousness and a number of points recorded on the licence of the identified driver, and they are notified in two stages, the citation and the penalty, with periods for the prior defence and the appeal. The state DETRAN, municipalities with municipalised traffic and the Federal Highway Police apply them; SENATRAN coordinates the national systems.
DETRAN-SE records each infraction against the plate and the RENAVAM, notifies the owner and receives the prior defence and the appeals; SMTT enforces Aracaju with cameras and agents, and Nossa Senhora do Socorro and Itabaiana have their own municipal bodies. DER-SE enforces the state roads and the Federal Highway Police BR-101 and BR-235; with an overdue fine the annual licensing is not issued.
What the API returns for this jurisdiction
In Sergipe a plate, with the RENAVAM when the source requires it, is sent to the Brazil fines API, which walks its integrated sources and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it:
- Issuing body and infraction notice number exactly as the source publishes them.
- Date, location and infraction code under the traffic code.
- Value, status (citation, penalty, paid) and points when the source reports them.
- Coverage per source and a partial-result flag when any failed to answer.
How to check a plate in Sergipe
To check a plate by hand, the DETRAN-SE portal shows the infractions and the licensing status with the plate and the RENAVAM, and the Carteira Digital de Trânsito app, coordinated by SENATRAN, concentrates the notices of every body. With ten units that is enough; with a hundred, the API walks the integrated sources by plate and returns the result split by body.
What to watch if you run a fleet in Sergipe
A carrier crossing Sergipe on BR-101 between Salvador and Recife several times a week piles up PRF camera infractions on trucks without a fixed driver, and the notice reaches the base in another state; looking up each plate at month end, with the result stored per body, lets you name the driver within the period.
For an oil contractor company based in Aracaju, the plate lookup before licensing finds the SMTT and DER infractions that would block the procedure for the whole fleet.
How to integrate
A lookup is a POST with the identifier and, optionally, the jurisdictions to include; the initial response accepts the job and the result arrives by status lookup or webhook, because official sources answer in seconds or minutes. The asynchronous APIs guide explains how to retry without duplicating lookups, and the API page describes the full contract.

}Limits and considerations
- Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
- Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
- A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
- The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
