Rio de Janeiro combines the capital, with Linha Amarela, Linha Vermelha and Avenida Brasil, with Niterói and São Gonçalo across the bridge, the Baixada Fluminense, the port of Itaguaí and the Arco Metropolitano, and the Dutra and BR-101 joining it with São Paulo and the Lakes Region. Infractions are applied by DETRAN-RJ in the registry, by CET-Rio and the municipal bodies in the cities, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones.
Context and authorities
Under the Brazilian Traffic Code fines have a fixed value per seriousness, add points to the licence and are paid with a discount by joining the electronic notification system; a vehicle with overdue fines gets neither the annual licensing nor the transfer. The state DETRAN concentrates those from state roads and the registry, municipalities apply those from their streets and the Federal Highway Police those from federal highways, integrated by SENATRAN.
DETRAN-RJ keeps the plate and RENAVAM register, where each infraction is entered, and processes the prior defence and the appeals before the JARI; CET-Rio enforces the capital’s roads with cameras and agents, and Niterói, Duque de Caxias and Nova Iguaçu have their own municipal bodies. The concessionaire of the Rio–Niterói bridge and those of the Dutra and BR-101 enforce speed, and the Federal Highway Police acts on federal highways; an overdue fine blocks licensing.
What the API returns for this jurisdiction
In Rio de Janeiro a plate, with the RENAVAM when the source requires it, is sent to the Brazil fines API, which walks its integrated sources and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it:
- The body that recorded the infraction and its number, unnormalised.
- The date and reason, with the location if the source reports it.
- The value and status current at the source.
- Which sources answered and which did not, on every lookup.
How to check a plate in Rio de Janeiro
Manual verification starts at the DETRAN-RJ portal, with plate and RENAVAM, and is completed in SENATRAN’s national app for infractions from other states and from federal highways. That round, repeated for every unit, is what the API replaces: one lookup per plate across the integrated sources, with the result per source.
What to watch if you run a fleet in Rio de Janeiro
A delivery or service fleet crossing the city on the concessioned lines and the bridge several times a day piles up CET-Rio, DETRAN and concessionaire infractions on plates rotating between drivers; a plate lookup at the close of each month, stored per body, lets you name the driver before the citation period expires.
For a rent-a-car at Galeão or Santos Dumont airport, the plate lookup at the return of each rental charges the customer the camera infraction that would otherwise arrive months later with the points on the company.
How to integrate
The integration starts with one POST per vehicle, with the jurisdiction as an optional filter. Since sources answer at their own pace, the API accepts the job and delivers the result by status or webhook; store the idempotency key before sending, as the asynchronous APIs guide describes. The API page details limits and fields.

}Limits and considerations
- Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
- Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
- A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
- The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
