Ceará revolves around Fortaleza and its metropolitan region, with Caucaia and Maracanaú, the Pecém port and industrial complex, the tourist coast from Jericoacoara to Canoa Quebrada and BR-116 and BR-222 leaving towards the interior and the neighbouring states; Juazeiro do Norte and the Cariri add a pole of their own in the south. Infractions are applied by DETRAN-CE in the registry, by AMC and the municipal bodies in the cities, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones.

Context and authorities

Infractions are governed by the Brazilian Traffic Code: each has a fixed value, a seriousness and a number of points recorded on the licence of the identified driver, and they are notified in two stages, the citation and the penalty, with periods for the prior defence and the appeal. The state DETRAN, municipalities with municipalised traffic and the Federal Highway Police apply them; SENATRAN coordinates the national systems.

DETRAN-CE keeps the plate and RENAVAM register, where each infraction is entered, and processes the prior defence and the appeals before the JARI; AMC enforces Fortaleza with cameras and agents, and Caucaia, Sobral and Juazeiro do Norte have their own municipal bodies. DER-CE enforces the state roads towards the coast and the Federal Highway Police BR-116 and BR-222; no overdue fine may remain pending when licensing the vehicle.

What the API returns for this jurisdiction

In Ceará a plate, with the RENAVAM when the source requires it, is sent to the Brazil fines API, which walks its integrated sources and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it:

  • Issuing body and infraction notice number exactly as the source publishes them.
  • Date, location and infraction code under the traffic code.
  • Value, status (citation, penalty, paid) and points when the source reports them.
  • Coverage per source and a partial-result flag when any failed to answer.

How to check a plate in Ceará

A plate is checked by hand at the DETRAN-CE portal and, for infractions from other bodies, in SENATRAN’s national channels. The API does the same round at scale and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

What to watch if you run a fleet in Ceará

A rent-a-car in Fortaleza delivering cars for the west coast and Jericoacoara receives the AMC and state-road infractions weeks after the return; the plate lookup when closing each rental, with the result stored next to the contract, charges them to the customer while the guarantee is still valid.

A container fleet from the Pecém complex leaving on BR-222 and BR-116 piles up PRF camera infractions on trucks without a fixed driver; the monthly plate lookup, stored per body, lets you name the driver within the period.

How to integrate

Each vehicle is sent in a POST, with the jurisdictions to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The vehicle lookup quality guide explains how to handle a source that did not answer.

Limits and considerations

  • Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
  • Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
  • A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
  • The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
