Amapá is an island by road: Macapá, the capital, on the mouth of the Amazon and the Equator line, has no land connection with the rest of Brazil; vehicles arrive by ferry from Belém, and BR-156 climbs towards Oiapoque and the border with French Guiana, partly unpaved. Almost all infractions are urban: they are applied by DETRAN-AP in the registry, by Macapá’s CTMac with cameras and agents, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on BR-156 and BR-210.
Context and authorities
The framework is the Brazilian Traffic Code, which classifies infractions as minor, medium, serious and very serious with fixed-value fines and points on the driver’s licence; the state DETRAN, the municipal traffic bodies and the Federal Highway Police on federal highways apply them, and SENATRAN integrates the national registries. An unpaid fine blocks the annual licensing and the transfer of the vehicle.
DETRAN-AP keeps the plate and RENAVAM register, where each infraction is entered, and processes the prior defence and the appeals before the JARI; CTMac enforces Macapá with cameras on the avenues and agents, and Santana, the port city, has its own municipal body. The Federal Highway Police acts on BR-156 towards Oiapoque; no overdue fine may remain pending when licensing the vehicle.
What the API returns for this jurisdiction
In Amapá a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the Brazil fines API and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, as the source publishes it:
- The body that recorded the infraction and its number, unnormalised.
- The date and reason, with the location if the source reports it.
- The value and status current at the source.
- Which sources answered and which did not, on every lookup.
How to check a plate in Amapá
A plate is checked by hand at the DETRAN-AP portal and, for infractions from other bodies, in SENATRAN’s national channels. The API does the same round at scale and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.
What to watch if you run a fleet in Amapá
A distribution fleet covering Macapá and Santana every day piles up CTMac camera infractions on plates rotating between drivers, with the citation notice reaching the company with a short period to name the driver; looking up each plate at month end, with the result stored per body, lets you do it in time.
For a company licensing its whole fleet in the same month and resupplying it by ferry from Belém, the plate lookup before the procedure finds the infractions from two states that would block it.
How to integrate
A lookup is a POST with the identifier and, optionally, the jurisdictions to include; the initial response accepts the job and the result arrives by status lookup or webhook, because official sources answer in seconds or minutes. The asynchronous APIs guide explains how to retry without duplicating lookups, and the API page describes the full contract.

}Limits and considerations
- Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
- Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
- A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
- The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
