The Valparaíso Region combines the ports of Valparaíso and San Antonio, through which a good share of Chile’s foreign trade enters and leaves, with Viña del Mar and the weekend coast of Santiago residents, joined to the capital by the concessioned Routes 68 and 78; Quillota, Los Andes and the Los Libertadores pass to Argentina add international trucks. Each comuna has its local police court, Carabineros issues fines on the routes and the cameras and gantries register by plate in the Civil Registry.

Context and authorities

Traffic fines are sanctions applied by the local police court of each comuna under Law 18.290, with amounts in monthly tax units according to the seriousness of the infraction; those on motorways and highways are issued by Carabineros, and the cameras and gantries of a concessioned motorway generate complaints that arrive by post. An unpaid fine is entered in the Civil Registry’s register and blocks the circulation permit until it is paid.

The local police courts of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, San Antonio and Los Andes rule on the fines of their comunas, with enforced parking in the flat of Valparaíso and in Viña during summer; the concessionaires of Routes 68 and 78 report passes without a TAG at the court of the gantry’s comuna. Registered fines are entered by plate and block the circulation permit until they are paid.

What the API returns for this jurisdiction

In the Valparaíso Region a plate is sent to the Chile fines API, which walks its integrated sources and returns each fine with the authority that recorded it:

  • Court or authority and case number or fine number exactly as the source publishes them.
  • Date, comuna and article infringed when the source reports it.
  • Amount in tax units and pesos, with the current status.
  • Coverage per source and a partial-result flag when any failed to answer.

How to check a plate in the Valparaíso Region

A plate is checked by hand with the Civil Registry certificate and, for cases with a summons, at the local police court of the comuna. The API does the same round at scale and returns each fine with the authority that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

What to watch if you run a fleet in the Valparaíso Region

A container transport fleet running between San Antonio, Valparaíso and Santiago piles up gantry complaints and Carabineros fines on trucks rotating between drivers, at courts of different comunas; looking up each plate at month end, with the result stored per authority, lets you assign them to the trip’s driver before they are registered.

For a rent-a-car in Viña del Mar, the plate lookup at the return of each rental charges the customer the parking or camera fine that would otherwise block the circulation permit months later.

How to integrate

Each vehicle is sent in a POST, with the jurisdictions to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The vehicle lookup quality guide explains how to handle a source that did not answer.

Limits and considerations

  • Fines with a summons to the driver are processed at the corresponding local police court and are not always entered in the plate register.
  • Amounts in monthly tax units are converted at the value of the month of payment; the final amount is set by the court.
  • A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of fines.
  • The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
