Mato Grosso is the country’s largest grain producer and its traffic is that of the harvest: BR-163 descends from Sinop and Sorriso to Cuiabá and Rondonópolis and continues south or climbs towards the river ports of Pará, BR-364 crosses it towards Rondônia and Goiás, and distances between cities are measured in hundreds of kilometres. Infractions are applied by DETRAN-MT in the registry, by the municipal bodies in Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones.

Context and authorities

Infractions are governed by the Brazilian Traffic Code: each has a fixed value, a seriousness and a number of points recorded on the licence of the identified driver, and they are notified in two stages, the citation and the penalty, with periods for the prior defence and the appeal. The state DETRAN, municipalities with municipalised traffic and the Federal Highway Police apply them; SENATRAN coordinates the national systems.

DETRAN-MT is the registry body: it enters the infraction against the plate and the RENAVAM and processes the notice, the defence and the appeal; Cuiabá, Várzea Grande, Rondonópolis and Sinop have their own municipal bodies, and the military highway police enforces the state roads. The BR-163 concessionaires and the Federal Highway Police act on federal highways with weight and speed checks; the annual licensing stays blocked while an overdue fine exists.

What the API returns for this jurisdiction

In Mato Grosso a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the Brazil fines API and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, as the source publishes it:

  • The body that recorded the infraction and its number, unnormalised.
  • The date and reason, with the location if the source reports it.
  • The value and status current at the source.
  • Which sources answered and which did not, on every lookup.

How to check a plate in Mato Grosso

Manual verification starts at the DETRAN-MT portal, with plate and RENAVAM, and is completed in SENATRAN’s national app for infractions from other states and from federal highways. That round, repeated for every unit, is what the API replaces: one lookup per plate across the integrated sources, with the result per source.

What to watch if you run a fleet in Mato Grosso

A tractor-unit fleet hauling soybeans on BR-163 from Sorriso to the ports piles up PRF and concessionaire overload and camera infractions along two thousand kilometres, on units rotating between drivers; looking up the plates every month and filing the result per body lets you name the driver while the period is still open.

For a cooperative or a carrier licensing hundreds of units in the same month, the plate lookup before the procedure finds the infractions that would block licensing in the middle of the harvest.

How to integrate

A lookup is a POST with the identifier and, optionally, the jurisdictions to include; the initial response accepts the job and the result arrives by status lookup or webhook, because official sources answer in seconds or minutes. The asynchronous APIs guide explains how to retry without duplicating lookups, and the API page describes the full contract.

Limits and considerations

  • Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
  • Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
  • A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
  • The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
