Sonora is a state of long distances crossed by Highway 15, which descends from Nogales and the Arizona border to Hermosillo, Guaymas and Ciudad Obregón and continues towards Sinaloa; on it travel agricultural export trailers, mining transport and cars crossing into the United States. Urban infractions are issued by the municipal transit offices of Hermosillo, Obregón and Nogales, and those on state roads by the state police; debts are collected with the state’s vehicle control and renewal.

Context and authorities

Each entity applies its own traffic regulation and its early-payment discount calendar; amounts are set in UMA and overdue debts are collected with updates and surcharges. The link with the tenencia tax, plate renewal and verification means a forgotten infraction shows up right at the procedure. The Sonora Government portal gathers official information.

The state public-security police issues infractions on state highways and the municipalities on their streets, each with its own regulation and treasury; the state fiscal agency adds vehicle debts to the annual vehicle control and conditions the renewal on paying final infractions. At the border, units with Arizona plates and imported ones add one more layer of documentation at every check.

What the API returns for this entity

In Sonora a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the Mexico fines API and returns each infraction with the authority that recorded it, as the source publishes it:

  • The authority that recorded the infraction and its folio, unnormalised.
  • The date and reason, with the location if the source reports it.
  • The amount and status current at the source, with the discounts it publishes.
  • The payment reference when the authority offers one.
  • Which sources answered and which did not, to tell a complete result from a partial one.

How to check a plate in Sonora

A plate is checked by hand at the Sonora Government portal and, for the vehicle’s identity, at the REPUVE. The API does the same round at scale and returns each infraction with the authority that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

What to watch if you run a fleet in Sonora

An export fleet climbing to Nogales every day with trailers registered in Hermosillo or Obregón piles up state infractions on Highway 15 and municipal ones in the cities along the way, and the notice reaches the company when the driver has already made ten more trips. Looking up each plate at month end, with the result stored per authority, lets you deduct the infraction from whoever was driving while the trip log exists.

For a pickup company serving the farm fields of the south of the state, the plate lookup before renewing the vehicle control prevents a forgotten debt from leaving the unit idle in the middle of the season.

How to integrate

Each plate is sent in a POST, with the entities to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The vehicle lookup quality guide explains how to handle partial results and the API page details access.

Limits and considerations

  • Infractions on federal highways are issued by the National Guard and paid separately from state debts.
  • UMA amounts are updated every year; the final amount is set by the authority at the time of payment.
  • A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
  • The API neither pays fines nor handles clarifications; it delivers information to decide.
