Maldonado lives off the season: Punta del Este, José Ignacio and Piriápolis receive hundreds of thousands of visitors in summer, many with Argentine and Brazilian plates or in rental cars, via the Interbalnearia and routes 9, 10 and 39. The Intendencia’s fines concentrate in January and February, in parking, speeding and checks on the peninsula, and are collected through SUCIVE together with the vehicle tax; those on national routes are issued by the Policía Caminera.

Context and authorities

The framework is Law 18.191 on Traffic and Road Safety, which defines the infractions and expresses fines in adjustable units, and each intendencia applies them in its department through its transit office; on national routes the Policía Caminera acts. Fine debts are collected together with the vehicle tax through SUCIVE, the single system that unified collection across the nineteen departments, and they block the transfer and the renewal of the vehicle booklet.

The Intendencia’s Transit and Transport Directorate issues fines with inspectors and cameras in Punta del Este, Maldonado and Piriápolis, with metered parking on the peninsula during the season; a defence is filed with the Intendencia and payment is made through SUCIVE. Fines on foreign plates are collected on the spot or remain recorded against the vehicle for its next entry.

What the API returns for this jurisdiction

In Maldonado a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the Uruguay fines API and returns each fine with the intendencia or authority that applied it, as the source publishes it:

  • The authority that applied the fine and its number, unnormalised.
  • The date and reason, with the location if the source reports it.
  • The amount and status current at the source.
  • Which sources answered and which did not, on every lookup.

How to check a plate in Maldonado

A plate is checked by hand at SUCIVE and, for the detail and the defence, at the Maldonado Intendencia portal. The API does the same round at scale and returns each fine with the authority that applied it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

What to watch if you run a fleet in Maldonado

For a rent-a-car in Punta del Este, the parking fine of a customer who has already returned to Buenos Aires becomes the company’s own debt next to the vehicle tax if nobody saw it at the return; the plate lookup when closing each rental, with the result stored next to the contract, charges it while the guarantee is still valid.

A service fleet coming up from Montevideo in season piles up Maldonado Intendencia fines on capital plates; the monthly plate lookup, stored per authority, separates those of each department and assigns them to the driver on shift.

How to integrate

A lookup is a POST with the identifier and, optionally, the jurisdictions to include; the initial response accepts the job and the result arrives by status lookup or webhook, because official sources answer in seconds or minutes. The asynchronous APIs guide explains how to retry without duplicating lookups, and the API page describes the full contract.

Limits and considerations

  • Fines from the Policía Caminera on national routes are processed by the Ministry of the Interior and are also collected through SUCIVE.
  • Amounts in adjustable units are converted at the current value; the final amount is set by the intendencia at the time of payment.
  • A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of fines.
  • The API neither pays fines nor handles defences; it delivers information to decide.
