The Aysén Region is deep Patagonia: Coyhaique and Puerto Aysén concentrate almost all the population, the Carretera Austral runs through it from north to south with long gravel stretches, and summer tourism, cattle farming and salmon farming move pickups and trucks on roads that cross into Argentina at Coyhaique Alto and Huemules. Each comuna has its local police court, Carabineros issues fines on the routes and the cameras register by plate in the Civil Registry.

Context and authorities

Traffic fines are sanctions applied by the local police court of each comuna under Law 18.290, with amounts in monthly tax units according to the seriousness of the infraction; those on motorways and highways are issued by Carabineros, and the cameras and gantries of a concessioned motorway generate complaints that arrive by post. An unpaid fine is entered in the Civil Registry’s register and blocks the circulation permit until it is paid.

The local police courts of Coyhaique and Aysén rule on almost all the region’s fines, with parking enforcement in downtown Coyhaique; Carabineros issues speeding and documentation fines on the Carretera Austral and on the roads to the border passes. Fines on Argentine vehicles are issued on the spot and registered ones block the circulation permit until they are paid.

What the API returns for this jurisdiction

In the Aysén Region a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the Chile fines API and returns each fine with the court or authority that recorded it, as the source publishes it:

  • Court or authority and case number or fine number exactly as the source publishes them.
  • Date, comuna and article infringed when the source reports it.
  • Amount in tax units and pesos, with the current status.
  • Coverage per source and a partial-result flag when any failed to answer.

How to check a plate in the Aysén Region

Manual verification starts at the Civil Registry’s Register of Unpaid Fines, which concentrates the registered fines of the whole country, and continues at the local police court of the comuna for those that summon the driver. That round, repeated for every unit, is what the API replaces: one lookup per plate across the integrated sources, with the result per source.

What to watch if you run a fleet in the Aysén Region

A rent-a-car in Coyhaique or Balmaceda delivering pickups for the Carretera Austral receives the Carabineros fines weeks later, when the customer has already flown home; the plate lookup when closing each rental, with the result stored next to the contract, charges them while the guarantee is still valid.

For a salmon farm or a ranch with its own fleet renewing the circulation permit in Coyhaique, the plate lookup before the procedure prevents a forgotten registered fine from leaving a pickup off the road.

How to integrate

Each vehicle is sent in a POST, with the jurisdictions to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The vehicle lookup quality guide explains how to handle a source that did not answer.

Limits and considerations

  • Fines with a summons to the driver are processed at the corresponding local police court and are not always entered in the plate register.
  • Amounts in monthly tax units are converted at the value of the month of payment; the final amount is set by the court.
  • A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of fines.
  • The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
