# Vehicle data by API: use cases for rent-a-cars, insurers, dealerships and fintechs

Five industries, five moments when a timely vehicle data point changes a decision: the return of a rental, underwriting a policy, appraising a used car, granting a car loan and a fleet’s month-end close.

The same vehicle lookups are worth different things depending on who makes them and when. This guide walks through five industries that integrate the [fines](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/traffic-fines-argentina/), [VTV](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/vtv-argentina/), [RTO](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/rto-argentina/), [recalls](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/vehicle-recalls-argentina/) and [parts etching](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/parts-etching-argentina/) APIs at a concrete moment of their process, and what changes when the data arrives before the decision rather than after it.

## Rent-a-car: the return

The critical moment for a rent-a-car is the return of the vehicle: it is the last chance to charge the customer a fine issued during the rental. A plate lookup at the return, with the result stored next to the contract, charges the fine to whoever was driving and pays with a discount; without that lookup, the fine arrives months later on the company’s plate. The current VTV of each unit and its open recalls enter the same check, because a unit with an expired inspection should not go out on a new rental.

## Insurers: underwriting and claims

When underwriting a policy, the insurer wants to know whether the vehicle has a valid technical inspection and whether it carries unattended recalls, two data points that weigh on risk and premium; when settling a claim, an expired VTV or an open recall on the component that failed changes the assessment. Plate lookups at both moments, with the answer as the official source publishes it, leave the decision documented.

## Used-car dealerships: the appraisal

A dealership taking a used car in part exchange or buying it for resale needs the full picture before setting the price: pending fines in the jurisdictions where it circulated, a valid VTV or RTO depending on the province, open recalls for the model and the parts etching where the jurisdiction requires it for the transfer. Each lookup arrives separately and is stored with the appraisal; the guide on the [traffic-fine clearance certificate](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/clearance-certificate-for-traffic-fines-in-argentina/) explains why fines block the transfer.

## Car-loan fintechs: the approval

A fintech financing a vehicle with a lien assesses the collateral as much as the borrower: a plate with accumulated fines or an expired inspection is collateral that is harder to enforce and to sell. The plate lookup at approval and at each renewal of the associated policy, integrated into the approval flow, replaces a documentation request that takes the customer days to gather.

## Fleets: the month-end close

For a delivery, service or transport fleet, the month-end close is the moment to assign each fine to the driver while the trip record exists, to schedule the inspections that expire and to review the open recalls per model. The guide on [integrating fine lookups into a fleet](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/integrating-fine-lookups-into-a-fleet-operation/) describes the events and the monthly batch.

In all five cases the pattern is the same: the lookup fires at the moment of the process when the decision can still change, and the result is stored as the source published it, split by authority. The [vehicle lookup quality](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/vehicle-data-quality/) guide explains how to read a source that did not answer.

## What they need to start

1. Choose the moment of the process when the lookup changes the decision.
2. Define which APIs enter at that moment: fines always, VTV or RTO depending on the jurisdiction, recalls and etching depending on the industry.
3. Integrate the POST per plate and receive the result by status or webhook.
4. Store the result next to the contract, policy, appraisal or file that motivated it.
