# Traffic fines in Tierra del Fuego: authorities, deadlines and API lookups

How traffic fines work in Tierra del Fuego, between Ushuaia, Río Grande and the Garibaldi pass, and how an island fleet queries them by plate with the API.

Jurisdiction

Tierra del Fuego Province · Argentina

Tierra del Fuego has a single route that matters, National Route 3 between Río Grande and Ushuaia through the Garibaldi pass, and a particular vehicle fleet because of the island’s special customs regime, with vehicles that face restrictions to circulate on the mainland. Urban infractions are ruled on by the municipal misdemeanour courts of Ushuaia and Río Grande; route infractions depend on the provincial road-safety authority.

## Context and authorities

As in the rest of the country, the [National Traffic Law 24.449](https://www.argentina.gob.ar/normativa/nacional/ley-24449-818/texto) applies: fines are set in fixed units and lapse after two years if minor and five if serious. For local procedures and rules, the starting point is the [Tierra del Fuego Government portal](https://www.tierradelfuego.gob.ar/).

Ushuaia and Río Grande rule on their urban fines in municipal misdemeanour courts, with checks at the entrances, on the waterfront avenue and in the port areas; Tolhuin has its own. On Route 3, including the Garibaldi pass, fines are issued by the provincial road-safety authority, with Gendarmería checks at the San Sebastián pass towards Chile. A defence is filed with the authority that issued the fine.

## What the API returns for this jurisdiction

For Tierra del Fuego, every plate lookup returns the fines reported by the queried authorities, with the authority that issued them:

- The authority that issued the fine and its number, unnormalised.
- The date and description of the infraction, with the location if the court reports it.
- The amount and status current at the source, with the payment conditions it publishes.
- The link to the payment slip when the authority offers one.
- Which sources answered and which did not, to tell a complete result from a partial one.

The response splits the result by authority and reports which ones answered; a result with no fines in one does not rule out fines in another Tierra del Fuego authority.

## How to check a plate in Tierra del Fuego

Manual verification starts with the [ANSV national lookup](https://consultainfracciones.seguridadvial.gob.ar/) and continues on the [Tierra del Fuego Government portal](https://www.tierradelfuego.gob.ar/) and at the municipal courts. That round, repeated for every plate, is what the API replaces: one lookup per plate across the integrated authorities, with the result split by source so you know what was verified and what was not.

## What to watch if you run a fleet in Tierra del Fuego

Vehicles registered on the island under the special customs regime cross into Chile and re-enter through San Sebastián with document checks at every pass; an unpaid fine in Ushuaia or Río Grande resurfaces at every later check and makes regularisation more expensive. Checking the plate before each trip along Route 3 avoids discovering it at the border.

In winter the traffic towards the ski centre and the port multiplies the checks in Ushuaia; a rent-a-car or a port logistics company that checks the plate at the close of each service, with the per-source result stored, charges the fine to the right customer and keeps traceability towards the court.

## How to integrate

Each plate is sent in a POST, with the jurisdictions to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The [vehicle lookup quality](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/vehicle-data-quality/) guide explains how to handle partial results and the [API page](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/traffic-fines-argentina/) details access.

JSONIllustrative example, not a contract.

```json
{
  "plate": "ABC123",
  "jurisdictions": [
    "AR-V"
  ]
}
```

## Limits and considerations

- The island’s customs regime does not change how infractions are handled, but it does change how vehicles circulate outside it.
- Fixed-unit amounts are converted at the value current at the source; the final amount is set by the authority at the time of payment.
- A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
- The API neither pays fines nor handles defences; it delivers information to decide.
