Infractions are applied by DETRAN-RN in the registry, by Natal’s STTU and the municipal bodies in the cities, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones. ## Context and authorities Under the [Brazilian Traffic Code](https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/l9503compilado.htm) fines have a fixed value per seriousness, add points to the licence and are paid with a discount by joining the electronic notification system; a vehicle with overdue fines gets neither the annual licensing nor the transfer. The state DETRAN concentrates those from state roads and the registry, municipalities apply those from their streets and the Federal Highway Police those from federal highways, integrated by [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran). DETRAN-RN is the registry body: it enters the infraction against the plate and the RENAVAM and processes the notice, the defence and the appeal; STTU enforces Natal with cameras and agents, and Mossoró and Parnamirim have their own municipal bodies. DER-RN enforces the state roads towards the beaches and the Federal Highway Police BR-101 and BR-304; the annual licensing stays blocked while an overdue fine exists. ## What the API returns for this jurisdiction In Rio Grande do Norte a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the [Brazil fines API](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/traffic-fines-brazil/) and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, as the source publishes it: - The body that recorded the infraction and its number, unnormalised. - The date and reason, with the location if the source reports it. - The value and status current at the source. - Which sources answered and which did not, on every lookup. The response reports which sources were queried and which answered; for Rio Grande do Norte, the official channel is the DETRAN portal described below, and a result with no infractions in the integrated sources does not rule out records there or at the Federal Highway Police. ## How to check a plate in Rio Grande do Norte To check a plate by hand, the [DETRAN-RN portal](https://www.detran.rn.gov.br/) shows the infractions and the licensing status with the plate and the RENAVAM, and the Carteira Digital de Trânsito app, coordinated by [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran), concentrates the notices of every body. With ten units that is enough; with a hundred, the API walks the integrated sources by plate and returns the result split by body. ## What to watch if you run a fleet in Rio Grande do Norte An oil contractor fleet rotating pickups between Mossoró, Natal and the fields piles up PRF camera infractions on BR-304 and municipal-body ones on units that change crew every shift; looking up the plates every month and filing the result per body lets you name the driver while the period is still open. For a rent-a-car in Natal delivering cars for Pipa and the coast, the plate lookup at the return of each rental charges the customer the STTU or DER infraction that would otherwise show up at licensing with the points on the company. ## How to integrate A lookup is a POST with the identifier and, optionally, the jurisdictions to include; the initial response accepts the job and the result arrives by status lookup or webhook, because official sources answer in seconds or minutes.
