# Traffic fines in Piauí: DETRAN-PI, authorities and API lookups

Piauí is a state of sertão and agricultural frontier: Teresina, the capital, sits on the Parnaíba river facing Timon, in Maranhão, and BR-316 and BR-343 join it with Parnaíba, the delta and the coast, while the south of Uruçuí and Bom Jesus produces soybeans for the northern ports on BR-135. Infractions are applied by DETRAN-PI in the registry, by Teresina’s Strans and the municipal bodies in the cities, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones.

The framework is the [Brazilian Traffic Code](https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/l9503compilado.htm), which classifies infractions as minor, medium, serious and very serious with fixed-value fines and points on the driver’s licence; the state DETRAN, the municipal traffic bodies and the Federal Highway Police on federal highways apply them, and [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran) integrates the national registries. An unpaid fine blocks the annual licensing and the transfer of the vehicle.

DETRAN-PI is the registry body: it enters the infraction against the plate and the RENAVAM and processes the notice, the defence and the appeal; Strans enforces Teresina with cameras and agents, and Parnaíba and Picos have their own municipal bodies. DER-PI enforces the state roads and the Federal Highway Police BR-316, BR-343 and BR-135; the annual licensing stays blocked while an overdue fine exists.

## What the API returns for this jurisdiction

## How to check a plate in Piauí

Manual verification starts at the [DETRAN-PI portal](https://www.detran.pi.gov.br/), with plate and RENAVAM, and is completed in [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran)’s national app for infractions from other states and from federal highways. That round, repeated for every unit, is what the API replaces: one lookup per plate across the integrated sources, with the result per source.

## What to watch if you run a fleet in Piauí

A grain fleet descending from the south of the state to the Maranhão ports on BR-135 piles up PRF weight and camera infractions on plates passing from one driver to another on trips of hundreds of kilometres; looking up the plates every month and filing the result per body lets you name the driver while the period is still open.

For a Teresina company whose units cross into Timon and Maranhão every day, the monthly plate lookup separates the infractions of the two states and prevents a forgotten one from blocking licensing.

## Limits and considerations

-   Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
-   Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
-   A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
-   The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
