Infractions are applied by DETRAN-MT in the registry, by the municipal bodies in Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones. ## Context and authorities Infractions are governed by the [Brazilian Traffic Code](https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/l9503compilado.htm): each has a fixed value, a seriousness and a number of points recorded on the licence of the identified driver, and they are notified in two stages, the citation and the penalty, with periods for the prior defence and the appeal. The state DETRAN, municipalities with municipalised traffic and the Federal Highway Police apply them; [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran) coordinates the national systems. DETRAN-MT is the registry body: it enters the infraction against the plate and the RENAVAM and processes the notice, the defence and the appeal; Cuiabá, Várzea Grande, Rondonópolis and Sinop have their own municipal bodies, and the military highway police enforces the state roads. That round, repeated for every unit, is what the API replaces: one lookup per plate across the integrated sources, with the result per source. ## What to watch if you run a fleet in Mato Grosso A tractor-unit fleet hauling soybeans on BR-163 from Sorriso to the ports piles up PRF and concessionaire overload and camera infractions along two thousand kilometres, on units rotating between drivers; looking up the plates every month and filing the result per body lets you name the driver while the period is still open.
