# Traffic fines in Maranhão: DETRAN-MA, authorities and API lookups

How traffic fines work in Maranhão, which bodies apply them and how a fleet checks its plates and queries them by API.

Maranhão links the port of Itaqui, through which the soybeans of the Matopiba and the ore of Carajás leave, with Imperatriz and the BR-010 Belém–Brasília, with Balsas and the agricultural south on BR-230 and with Teresina on BR-316 and BR-222; São Luís, on the island, concentrates the population and refining. Infractions are applied by DETRAN-MA in the registry, by São Luís’s SMTT and the municipal bodies in the cities, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on federal ones.

## Context and authorities

The framework is the [Brazilian Traffic Code](https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/l9503compilado.htm), which classifies infractions as minor, medium, serious and very serious with fixed-value fines and points on the driver’s licence; the state DETRAN, the municipal traffic bodies and the Federal Highway Police on federal highways apply them, and [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran) integrates the national registries. An unpaid fine blocks the annual licensing and the transfer of the vehicle.

DETRAN-MA keeps the plate and RENAVAM register, where each infraction is entered, and processes the prior defence and the appeals before the JARI; SMTT enforces São Luís with cameras and agents, and Imperatriz and Caxias have their own municipal bodies. The military highway police enforces the state roads and the Federal Highway Police BR-135, BR-222 and BR-010; no overdue fine may remain pending when licensing the vehicle.

## What the API returns for this jurisdiction

The response reports which sources were queried and which answered; for Maranhão, the official channel is the DETRAN portal described below, and a result with no infractions in the integrated sources does not rule out records there or at the Federal Highway Police.

## How to check a plate in Maranhão

A plate is checked by hand at the [DETRAN-MA portal](https://www.detran.ma.gov.br/) and, for infractions from other bodies, in [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran)’s national channels. The API does the same round at scale and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

## What to watch if you run a fleet in Maranhão

A grain fleet descending from Balsas to the port of Itaqui on BR-230 and BR-135 piles up PRF weight and camera infractions and those of the municipal bodies on units that change driver every trip; a plate lookup at the close of each month, stored per body, lets you name the driver before the citation period expires.

For an Imperatriz carrier running the Belém–Brasília up and down, the plate lookup before licensing finds the infractions from three states that would block the procedure.

## How to integrate

The integration starts with one POST per vehicle, with the jurisdiction as an optional filter. ## Limits and considerations

-   Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
-   Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
-   A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
-   The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
