# Traffic fines in the Araucanía Region: local courts, Civil Registry and API lookups

How traffic fines work in the Araucanía Region, which courts and authorities apply them and how a fleet checks its plates and queries them by API.

Jurisdiction

Araucanía Region · Chile

The Araucanía Region combines Temuco, the capital and commercial centre of the south, with the tourism of Pucón, Villarrica and the lakes and volcanoes, and with a forestry and agricultural industry moving trucks on the concessioned Route 5 and the routes to the mountains and the coast. In summer, cars from Santiago and from Argentina, entering through the Mamuil Malal pass, fill the southern routes. Each comuna has its local police court, Carabineros issues fines on the routes and the cameras and gantries register by plate in the Civil Registry.

## Context and authorities

Each comuna has its local police court, which applies [Law 18.290](https://www.bcn.cl/leychile/navegar?idNorma=29708) and sets fines in monthly tax units; discounted payment exists at many courts within the period of the summons. Registered fines, those that identify the vehicle by its plate and not the driver, are entered in the [Register of Unpaid Fines](https://www.registrocivil.cl/principal/servicios-en-linea/multas-de-transito-no-pagadas) and show up when renewing the [circulation permit](https://www.chileatiende.gob.cl/fichas/9611) or transferring the vehicle.

The local police courts of Temuco, Padre Las Casas, Villarrica and Pucón rule on the fines of their comunas, with parking enforcement in downtown Temuco and in Pucón during summer; the Route 5 concessionaire reports unpaid passes to the court of the gantry’s comuna. Fines on Argentine vehicles are issued on the spot and registered ones block the circulation permit until they are paid.

## What the API returns for this jurisdiction

In the Araucanía Region a plate lookup walks the integrated sources of the [Chile fines API](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/traffic-fines-chile/) and returns each fine with the court or authority that recorded it, as the source publishes it:

- The authority that recorded the fine and its identifier, unnormalised.
- The date and reason, with the comuna if the source reports it.
- The amount and status current at the source.
- Which sources answered and which did not, on every lookup.

The response reports which sources were queried and which answered; for the Araucanía Region, the official channel is the Civil Registry’s unpaid-fines certificate described below, and a result with no fines in the integrated sources does not rule out entries recorded there.

## How to check a plate in the Araucanía Region

A plate is checked by hand with the [Civil Registry certificate](https://www.chileatiende.gob.cl/fichas/3439-certificado-de-multas-de-transito-no-pagadas) and, for cases with a summons, at the local police court of the comuna. The API does the same round at scale and returns each fine with the authority that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

## What to watch if you run a fleet in the Araucanía Region

A rent-a-car in Temuco delivering cars for Pucón and the lakes receives the parking and camera fines weeks after the return, when the customer is back in Santiago; the plate lookup when closing each rental, with the result stored next to the contract, charges them while the guarantee is still valid.

A forestry fleet hauling timber to the ports on Route 5 piles up gantry complaints and Carabineros fines on trucks rotating between drivers; the monthly plate lookup, stored per authority, assigns them to the trip’s driver.

## How to integrate

Each vehicle is sent in a POST, with the jurisdictions to include if you do not want to query all of them. The response accepts the job and the result is retrieved by status lookup or arrives by webhook once the sources finish answering. The [vehicle lookup quality](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/vehicle-data-quality/) guide explains how to handle a source that did not answer.

JSONIllustrative example, not a contract.

```json
{
  "plate": "BBBB10",
  "jurisdictions": [
    "CL-AR"
  ]
}
```

## Limits and considerations

- Fines with a summons to the driver are processed at the corresponding local police court and are not always entered in the plate register.
- Amounts in monthly tax units are converted at the value of the month of payment; the final amount is set by the court.
- A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of fines.
- The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
