# Traffic fines in Amazonas: DETRAN-AM, authorities and API lookups

How traffic fines work in Amazonas, which bodies apply them and how a fleet checks its plates and queries them by API.

Amazonas is Manaus: two million people and the free-trade zone with its industrial pole in a city surrounded by jungle and rivers, connected by road only with Roraima and Venezuela on BR-174 and with Porto Velho on BR-319, passable with difficulty; the rest of the state moves by boat. Almost all infractions are urban: they are applied by DETRAN-AM in the registry, by Manaus’s IMMU with cameras and agents, by the military police on state roads and by the Federal Highway Police on BR-174.

## Context and authorities

Under the [Brazilian Traffic Code](https://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/l9503compilado.htm) fines have a fixed value per seriousness, add points to the licence and are paid with a discount by joining the electronic notification system; a vehicle with overdue fines gets neither the annual licensing nor the transfer. The state DETRAN concentrates those from state roads and the registry, municipalities apply those from their streets and the Federal Highway Police those from federal highways, integrated by [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran).

DETRAN-AM is the registry body: it enters the infraction against the plate and the RENAVAM and processes the notice, the defence and the appeal; IMMU enforces Manaus with cameras on the avenues and agents downtown and in the industrial district, and the state’s other cities, from Parintins to Tefé, have limited traffic. The Federal Highway Police acts on BR-174 towards Boa Vista; the annual licensing stays blocked while an overdue fine exists.

## What the API returns for this jurisdiction

-   Date, location and infraction code under the traffic code.

The response reports which sources were queried and which answered; for Amazonas, the official channel is the DETRAN portal described below, and a result with no infractions in the integrated sources does not rule out records there or at the Federal Highway Police.

## How to check a plate in Amazonas

A plate is checked by hand at the [DETRAN-AM portal](https://www.detran.am.gov.br/) and, for infractions from other bodies, in [SENATRAN](https://www.gov.br/transportes/pt-br/assuntos/transito/senatran)’s national channels. The API does the same round at scale and returns each infraction with the body that recorded it, so verification becomes part of the fleet process rather than a spreadsheet.

## What to watch if you run a fleet in Amazonas

An industrial-pole fleet moving parts and staff between the district and the port every day piles up IMMU camera infractions on plates rotating between drivers, with the citation notice reaching the company with a short period to name the driver; looking up each plate at month end, with the result stored per body, lets you do it in time.

For a company exporting by boat and licensing its whole fleet in the same month, the plate lookup before the procedure finds the IMMU infractions that would block it.

## How to integrate

A lookup is a POST with the identifier and, optionally, the jurisdictions to include; the initial response accepts the job and the result arrives by status lookup or webhook, because official sources answer in seconds or minutes. ## Limits and considerations

-   Infractions on federal highways are recorded by the Federal Highway Police and are checked in the national channels, not at the state DETRAN.
-   Values are those of the traffic code current at the time of payment, with the applicable discount or surcharge; the final amount is set by the body.
-   A source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of infractions.
-   The API neither pays fines nor files defences; it delivers information to decide.
