# Data checklist before buying a used car in Argentina

Five lookups that separate a good used car from a problem: what each one says, where it is done by hand and how a dealership or a marketplace integrates them by plate before appraising.

A used car is bought with the eyes and paid for with the data. Before setting a price or signing a purchase agreement, there are five lookups that answer different questions: what the plate owes, whether it can circulate, whether the model has known unattended faults, whether the parts are etched and who the owner is. This guide walks through them in the order they are best done, names the official channel for each and shows how a dealership or a used-car marketplace integrates them by API.

## 1\. Pending fines

Traffic fines follow the plate and block the transfer until they are paid or the buyer assumes them in writing. By hand, the lookup is done at the court of the jurisdiction of registration, in the provincial circuit and in the [national lookup of the National Road Safety Agency](https://consultainfracciones.seguridadvial.gob.ar/). By API, the [Argentina fine lookup](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/traffic-fines-argentina/) returns each fine with the authority, the amount and the status, split by source. The guide on the [traffic-fine clearance certificate](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/clearance-certificate-for-traffic-fines-in-argentina/) explains what happens at the registry.

## 2\. Valid technical inspection

Depending on the province, the used car needs a valid [VTV](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/vtv-argentina/) or [RTO](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/rto-argentina/) to circulate and for several procedures, and an expired or failed inspection says something about the state of the vehicle and about the immediate cost that comes with it. The [directory of VTV plants in Buenos Aires province](https://apinitro.com/en/vtv/) shows where the procedure is done and what it costs.

## 3\. Open recalls

A recall is a manufacturer campaign to correct a safety fault in a series of units; the repair is free, but only if someone takes the car to the official service. A used car with unattended recalls is a unit with a known defect on board. The [recalls API](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/vehicle-recalls-argentina/) matches the model against the campaigns published by the authority and the manufacturers.

## 4\. Parts etching

In the jurisdictions that require it, parts etching (glass and parts engraved with the plate) is a condition for the transfer and a barrier against dismantling; its absence is not always a problem, but it is a procedure and a cost the buyer should know before closing. The [parts etching API](https://apinitro.com/en/apis/parts-etching-argentina/) reports the status published by the source.

## 5\. Ownership and plate format

The motor vehicle registry’s plate report confirms who the owner is, whether there is a lien or an inhibition and whether the plate exists with the format shown in the listing; before any lookup it is worth normalising the identifier as the guide on [plate formats](https://apinitro.com/en/articles/plate-formats-in-latin-america-how-to-identify-a-vehicle/) explains.

None of these lookups replaces the mechanical inspection or the official plate report; they organise the decision to buy and the price, and document what was known at the time of the appraisal.

## How a dealership or a marketplace integrates it

1. Every used car entering appraisal triggers the plate lookups in a single flow, with the per-source result stored next to the appraisal.
2. Pending fines and an expired inspection are deducted from the price or settled before publication.
3. Open recalls are scheduled at the official service before delivery.
4. The result is looked up again on the day of the transfer, to confirm nothing changed.

## Limits

- Official sources publish what they have registered; a source that does not answer is reported as such, never as an absence of debt.
- The plate report and the mechanical inspection remain procedures of their own; the APIs deliver the information to reach them without surprises.
